Dentastix

When the Dentastix brief landed in our inbox, we were ecstatic to start chewing on it. Through a variety of assets, ranging from billboards and prints to social media animations, we explored the world of stop-motion wool art through the eyes of CG. We loved the opportunity to build a style that felt playful and tactile, where even the bacteria had personality. It lets us lean into that sweet spot where ‘ew’ becomes ‘aww’.

To achieve the “fuzzy mouth” feeling we took a deep dive into CG felt and its look development - from the simplified silhouettes and the detailed threads, to the curated lighting which brought it all to life.

When it came to translating our designs into animation, we relied on a low frame rate, a subtle displacement and a simplified motion language to capture the classic stop motion -  tactile feel.”

PROCESS

Knowing that the primary deliverables for this project were large-format prints and billboards, we aimed for a level of detail that could withstand close scrutiny. Achieving the tactile, realistic texture of the felt required multiple rounds of look development and testing, but the result was a convincingly handmade feel, further emphasized by using a dropped frame rate to mimic true stop-motion animation.
